THE
LADY OF LIGHTNING AND WIND
Conceived and written by: Izabella Bicalho
Direction: Sueli Guerra
Musical Direction: Wladimir Pinheiro
About
A Dona dos Raios e do Vento (The Lady of Lighting and Wind) is a musical monologue featuring songs from the repertoire of Maria Bethânia.
Through theater and music, the performance explores the strength, sensitivity, and complexity of the feminine experience.
1. WOUNDED BEAST (Fera Ferida)
I destroyed everything
I made it out alive
My clothes and my dreams
Were torn apart as I left.
But I came out wounded
Struggling to hold back my cries
I was the perfect target
Struck in the heart so many times.
2. STAR (Estrela)
HELENA: Oh, that scared me! This rain keeps threatening to fall, but it never does.
There's no reason to be afraid. I never used to be.
It actually reminds me of my grandmother's country house, where I spent my vacations.
I loved watching the lightning and listening to the thunder.
When I was young, everything was so different.
I wanted to do so many things. I wanted to see the world. I had my friends. Life was fun, full of laughter and wonderful moments together.
Oh, I remember! I remember something I love!
Good food! That's right!
But it's not just eating. I love preparing food, mixing spices, discovering new flavors.
I'm passionate about cooking!
Hello, Mrs. Albertina! Are you baking a cake? I love your cakes! Can I stir the batter? And afterward, can I scrape the bowl?
Mrs. Albertina worked at our house for years. I loved watching her cook.
She was an amazing cook. She thought it was hilarious to see little me trying to get my hands into all the pots and pans.
I'm so glad she taught me how to cook. By the time I was ten, I already knew how to make several dishes.
Mrs. Albertina, will you help me make that lasagna I love? Can I choose the seasonings?
I love you, Mrs. Albertina!
But one day, Mrs. Albertina retired and left.
It was time for her to rest.
But I was devastated. She was like a mother to me.
And I had lost my partner in the kitchen.
My own mother hated seeing me cook.
So much so that when I grew up, she forced me to study literature at university.
She wanted me to learn French. She thought it was sophisticated!
Even though I begged her to let me study culinary arts.
I wanted to become a chef!
Being a chef is like being an artist!
But she would always say:
MOTHER: Helena Cristina!
Women have fought for so long to free themselves from the slavery of the kitchen!
I'm proud to say I don't even know how to fry an egg!
And you're telling me you want to become a cook?
For heaven's sake, girl!
Get out of that kitchen right now and go meet people at that extremely expensive university your father is paying for!
Who knows? Maybe you'll get lucky and find yourself a good husband!
I pray for that every single day!
And wash your hands properly! No man wants a woman smelling of garlic and onions!
God forbid!
A woman should always look beautiful, well dressed, wearing perfume, with her nails done.
And let your hair down, girl!
You always wear it tied back, looking like a nun!
HELENA: My mother never really saw me.
She never understood me.
That's how it was my entire life.
She walked all over my feelings and forced me to do things I didn't want to do.
Wait a minute… I've figured it out!
That's where my training began.
My training to always fulfill other people's wishes!
Who needs therapy when you can just come to the theater?
Luckily, I had wonderful friends.
They understood me.
I miss them…
I remember my best friend.
I absolutely adored her.
She was beautiful, confident, outgoing — basically, the complete opposite of me.
We studied together from kindergarten all the way through college.
And whenever she arrived at a party, everyone wanted to be around her.
Her name was Débora.
The queen of the dance floor!
3. RECONVEXO
I am the rain that throws Sahara sand
Over the cars of Rome.
I am the mermaid who dances, the fearless Iara
Water and leaves of the Amazon.
I am the shadow of the matriarch's voice
From Black Rome.
You can't catch me
You can't even see me.
My sound blinds you
You square, who are you?
Who never felt Henri Salvador's swing?
Who never followed Olodum dancing through Pelourinho?
Who never laughed at Andy Warhol's laughter?
Who didn't, who didn't, and never even said no?
I am the strong Black American man
With a golden earring in his ear.
I am the flower of the very first song
The oldest, newest sword and its blade.
I am the scent of desperate books
I am Gita Gogóia.
Your eyes look at me
But they cannot reach me.
I have no choice
You square, I'll cast you aside.
Who never prayed Dona Canô's novena?
Who never followed Joãozinho Beija-Flor, the beggar?
Who never loved Bobô's subtle elegance?
Who is neither Recôncavo nor can be reconvex?
DÉBORA: Thank you!
Hey! It's so good to see you!
Helena! Girl, you're way too quiet over there in that corner!
Come dance!
Get out on the dance floor!
Enjoy the party! Before you know it, it'll be over, and you'll have spent the whole night standing there like a statue!
Come on, girl! Shake that body!
And stop worrying about your hair!
I've already told you, it looks great!
Your mother doesn't know what she's talking about.
Don't listen to her!
You look gorgeous!
There are so many good-looking people here for you to meet!
Oh my God! I LOVE this song!
Girl, see Guto over there?
Let's go! I want to dance with him!
So, girl, as I was saying…
Roberto!
Wow! I didn't even see you!
Did you just get here?
Oh, okay.
Dance?
Sure! Let's go!
Go dance, girl!
HELENA: After Débora went off to dance, I just stood there.
Watching all those couples holding each other close, dancing.
And I thought to myself:
I'd love to dance like that with someone, too.
It could be Lucas, João, Márcio…
Actually, it could be almost any guy from our group.
Except…
Zé Bolota!
Hey! How are you?
Wow, I didn't even see you!
Dance?
Well, I can't. I twisted my…
What?
That's not what you meant?
Oh!
I'm standing here alone because…
And you? Aren't you enjoying the party?
Have fun?
With you?
Doing what?
What's that?
A ticket?
To see Flashdance?
How cool!
You want me to go with you?
Well, since you picked exactly the right movie, I'd love to go to the movies with you!
Zé was one of the nicest guys I had ever met.
He was sensitive, a great listener, funny, a wonderful friend.
Sometimes I wonder if I'd given him a chance, my life might have turned out very differently.
But Zé, Débora, and I became inseparable.
We had so much fun together.
Trips, parties, crazy adventures.
And it was at one of those college parties that I met the person who would change my life forever.
I can't stay here.
A frightened animal
Once tamed, forgets the danger
I let myself be deceived
And even carried away by you.
I know how much sadness I've endured
But somehow life goes on
Slowly dying for love.
I know the heart forgives
But it doesn't easily forget
What I have never forgotten.
HELENA: What is this place?
I've walked so far
Without looking back
My steps were free
Like a wild animal, with no direction, no ties.
HELENA: Where am I?
I felt so alone
Stumbling along my way
Searching for shelter
For help, a place, a friend.
A wounded animal
Guided by instinct
I retraced my steps
In a hopeless attempt to forget.
I know there were flowers
But they couldn't survive
The endless storms.
I know the scars speak
But words remain silent
About what I have never forgotten.
HELENA: Calm down, Helena. There's no reason to be afraid. This place is fine. There's nothing here. And besides, anywhere is better than where I was.
I won't change
There's no solution to this story
I'm a wounded beast
In body, soul, and heart.
HELENA: I did it! I did it! Today is the day of my victory!
2. STAR
The train of desire
Pierced through the darkness
Opening, without restraint
The womb of the dark earth.
The dew embraces the flower
Born from that pleasure
In that flash of pain
My song is simply here to say
That all of this is for me.
I saw it. I became a star!
A drifting raft beneath the open sky
Carries awakened hearts
Dreaming of lands of freedom.
Morning came, and I departed
But when I arrived here
The stars themselves could tell
That on the day I lost my way
I learned how to shine.
I saw it. I became a star!
I saw it!
HELENA: I'm free! Free! From now on, I'm only going to do what I want! Whatever I feel like doing! Only what I enjoy!
But what do I enjoy?
I don't know. I can't remember.
I can't even remember the last time I chose something I actually wanted to do.
I was so used to fulfilling everyone else's wishes that I forgot about myself.
So why did I do this to myself? Where did I learn to be this way?
Because we always learn these things somewhere…
Good grief, my head is full of questions!
4. IT'S LOVE
I won't deny it
I'm crazy about you
I'm dying to see you
I won't deny it.
PAULO: Nice to meet you. I'm Paulo.
I won't deny it
Without you, all I feel is longing
You bring me happiness
I won't deny it.
PAULO: I couldn't take my eyes off you.
I won't deny it
You're my sweetest honey
My little piece of heaven
I won't deny it.
PAULO: You're incredibly beautiful, you know that?
I'm the president of the National Students' Union here in Rio.
Do you know our headquarters at the university?
I'll take you there someday.
I have an office all to myself.
I was just elected unanimously.
One day, I'm going to be president of the National Students' Union!
You're my sweet beloved, my joy
My fairy tale, my fantasy
The peace I need to survive.
I'm your passionate lover, with a transparent soul
A madman in love, a little reckless
A complicated story to understand.
PAULO: Would you like to see my beach house?
I'll teach you how to water-ski.
I'm an excellent skier!
Snow skiing, too, by the way.
I want you in my life, gorgeous!
It's love…
That turns my head upside down and leaves me like this
That makes me think of you and forget myself
That makes me forget that life is meant to be lived.
HELENA: Can you believe it?
That man! Handsome, intelligent, charming, rich, a wonderful conversationalist…
Interested in me?
I could hardly believe it.
It seemed as though my mother's prayers were finally being answered.
That day, I believed Prince Charming really existed.
And when we went to bed together, the sex was spectacular!
I fell completely in love.
I felt so lucky!
MY LOVE (O MEU AMOR)
Lady Love
My love
Has a gentle way that's his alone
And it drives me crazy
When he kisses my lips.
My whole body shivers
And he kisses me slowly, deeply
Until even my soul feels kissed.
My love has a gentle way that's his alone
He steals my senses, whispers into my ears
So many beautiful and indecent secrets.
Then he plays with me
Laughs at my belly button
And sinks his teeth into me.
PAULO: Sweetheart, I don't think it's a good idea for you to talk to that guy. He's way too forward.
My beautiful girl, we should only spend time with people who add something to our lives.
Otherwise, we're just wasting time.
Look at your friend Débora.
Such an empty life!
All she thinks about is partying and having fun.
And that other guy, what's his name?
Zé Bolota?
A loser.
Now look at me.
I want to conquer the world through my achievements.
You want to succeed?
Stick with me, gorgeous.
You want to be my queen?
Then listen to your king.
HELENA: Queen…
No one had ever called me that before.
Well, he hadn't exactly said I was a queen.
He said I could become one.
So I decided I would become the queen he imagined me to be.
I'm your girl, you know?
And he's my man
My body is living proof
Of how good he makes me feel.
I'm your girl, you know?
And he's my man
My body is living proof
Of how good he makes me feel.
HELENA: We dated throughout college.
When he graduated, he asked me to marry him.
I dropped out of my literature degree, and we went to Paris for our honeymoon.
Finally, I could put into practice all those years of French lessons my mother had forced me to take!
Bonjour! Bonsoir!
Comment allez-vous?
Très bien!
Abat-jour?
Ah, merci! Merci!
When we returned, I began a new chapter in my life.
Married life.
I trusted him completely.
I did everything he asked me to do.
I believed I should make every possible effort to make him happy.
At first, everything was wonderful.
But as time went by, things began to change.
PAULO: What are you wearing, Helena?
I don't like it.
It's too short. Vulgar.
Where's that beautiful dress I gave you last week?
Wear that one.
It's much prettier.
Don't eat that, Helena.
It's bad for you.
It's full of preservatives and artificial coloring.
Terrible for your health!
I want you to age gracefully, my love.
I'm taking care of you.
I don't want some frail, decrepit old woman by my side someday!
What's that?
You want to go shopping for clothes?
There's no need.
The boutique I like sends a whole suitcase full of clothes for you to choose from.
I don't want you putting yourself at risk out on the streets.
Let me take the risks for both of us.
Sweetheart, I've had a brilliant idea!
I know exactly what you should do!
Visual arts!
That's it!
Painting, sculpture!
Isn't that an amazing idea?
It's perfect for you.
You've always got your head in the clouds.
Painting will be wonderful for you!
And I'll absolutely love having an artist for a wife!
HELENA: An artist?
Me?
All right…
Aaaah!
Actually, it was incredibly frustrating.
I never had any talent for painting or drawing.
Even as a child, my drawings were terrible.
Even my stick figures came out crooked!
And the paintings I made?
Absolutely awful!
And do you think that convinced Paulo I had no artistic talent?
Not at all!
He insisted I needed to work harder.
Study more and more.
Good grief, the pressure!
I hated doing it.
He was the one who wanted an artist for a wife.
He just forgot one little detail.
To ask me what I wanted.
What a joke!
He never asked me anything.
It's funny.
Looking back now at everything I went through, it's easy to recognize the abuse I was suffering.
But at the time, I couldn't see it.
It was hard to tell right from wrong because so many things he did for me seemed genuinely good.
HELENA: My love! This is absolutely beautiful!
Oh my God, I never imagined I'd own a piece of jewelry like this!
It's a dream!
Where are we going for our anniversary?
Dubai?
I see… That sounds nice.
But what about Portugal?
I've told you so many times how much I want to visit my grandparents.
I know you've already been there several times.
Of course I remember that Dubai is your dream.
But I miss my grandparents so much, and they're getting old…
Of course I want to see you happy, darling.
Yes, you do everything for me. I know!
All right.
That's fine.
We'll go to Dubai.
If it makes you happy, it makes me happy too.
HELENA: Needless to say, he wouldn't let me work outside the home.
He said he earned enough for both of us.
At first, I thought that was a good thing.
Doesn't it sound wonderful?
Not having to work?
Having someone support you financially?
Well, it isn't!
Because staying home all day doing nothing, isolated from the world, without friends, without dreams, without goals…
It makes life terribly sad.
And that's exactly how I felt.
I didn't know what to do.
So I decided to ask the only person I had left for help.
MOTHER: Helena Cristina!
You really love complaining when you've got everything handed to you on a silver platter!
That man gives you the very best of everything!
He takes care of you!
I can see that!
You're a lucky woman who doesn't appreciate what she has!
HELENA: I don't know why I even bothered asking her for help.
But I had no one else to turn to.
I felt lonely.
Depressed.
The relationship that had once seemed like a dream had turned into a nightmare.
I couldn't lie to myself anymore.
I was deeply unhappy.
6. EXPLODE, HEART (EXPLODE CORAÇÃO)
Enough of pretending, disguising, and hiding
What can no longer be concealed
What I can no longer keep silent.
The brightness in your eyes betrayed you
Revealing everything you tried to contain
Everything you refused to express
And kept from me.
Enough of fear, tears, suffering, smiling, giving
Losing yourself, finding yourself
And everything that makes life worth living.
I want to open myself completely
And let life come rushing in
Like the sun breaking through the darkness of dawn.
I want to feel the pain of this morning
Being born, breaking through, tearing open
Taking over my body.
And then I cry, I suffer
I love, I adore, I scream
Like a madwoman, delirious, like a child.
Feeling all my love overflowing
I can't hold it back anymore
Explode, heart!
I can't hold it back anymore
Explode, heart!
HELENA: I felt desperate.
I even thought about ending my life.
But that's when a miracle happened!
7. PAU DE ARARA
When I left the backlands
Sir, my hometown of Bodocó
My suitcase was just a sack
And its lock was a knot.
All I brought was my courage
And the clothes on my back
Traveling on a pau de arara.
I suffered, but I made it here
I suffered, but I made it here.
I brought a triangle in my bag
I brought a gonguê in my bag
I carried my longing inside my bag.
Xote, maracatu, and baião
I brought all of that in my bag.
Xote, maracatu, and baião
I brought all of that in my bag.
CIDA: Very nice to meet you! I'm Cida!
I was born in western Bahia, deep in the backlands.
Ever been there?
I used to swim in the São Francisco River, alongside the piranhas!
Ha, ha!
I arrived in this city over twenty years ago, and I never left.
It's a pretty crazy little city, but I like it here.
I worked for six years at Mrs. Hortência's apartment, number 302.
But go abroad with her?
God forbid!
Not a chance!
I love my forró dancing!
I love my freedom!
You think I'd move to some country where I don't even speak the language and have to depend on other people?
God forbid!
Depend on other people?
Never!
Now, about my work.
I'll clean the house from top to bottom, make everything spotless.
As long as there's a vacuum cleaner.
I don't like pushing dust from one side of the room to the other with a broom.
As for the laundry, I'll get everything nice and white, provided there's a washing machine.
But ironing?
No, thank you. I'm not a fan.
And these windows!
There sure are a lot of them!
I'm not hanging out of any windows to clean them.
I'm not stupid!
Now, in the kitchen, I can make the basics.
Just enough to get by.
Instant noodles, a fried egg…
Because I don't like cooking.
I work Monday through Friday, but I don't sleep at my employer's house.
And on Fridays, I need to leave early because I have my forró dancing in Rocinha.
That's sacred to me!
And for all the work I've described, I expect to be officially employed, with a signed work contract and benefits.
So, when do I start?
8. THE LAST PAU DE ARARA (ÚLTIMO PAU DE ARARA)
Life here is only hard
When the rain doesn't fall.
But when the rain comes
Everything grows
And there's abundance everywhere.
May the rain come soon
Dear God, may it come.
I'll only leave my Cariri
On the very last pau de arara.
I'll only leave my Cariri
On the very last pau de arara.
As long as my little cow
Still has skin and bones
And can carry her bell
Hanging around her neck.
I'll stay right here
May God in heaven help me.
Those who leave their homeland
Never truly settle anywhere else.
I'll only leave my Cariri
On the very last pau de arara.
I'll only leave my Cariri
On the very last pau de arara.
I'll only leave my Cariri
On the very last pau de arara.
CIDA: Mrs. Helena, I can't stand people who stick their noses into other people's business.
Always giving advice.
But in your case, I'm going to give you some advice because you really need it.
What your husband is doing isn't right!
You can't stay isolated from the world, trapped in this house just because he wants you to.
You're young, you're beautiful!
You should go out, have friends, enjoy yourself!
It'll do you good.
Otherwise, you're going to end up getting sick in here.
Look, where I come from, there were plenty of men like that.
Men who wanted to control their wives' lives.
Some of those terrible men even ended up killing their poor wives.
And I can tell you one thing.
That's no way to live.
Not for a poor woman.
Not for a rich woman.
Not for any woman!
HELENA: Cida became my right hand and my best friend.
Actually, my only friend.
She was the one I could talk to about my pain and my fears.
She always supported me.
And she kept encouraging me to stand up for myself and say what I was feeling.
One day, I finally gathered the courage to talk to Paulo.
PAULO: I don't understand what you're complaining about.
I give you everything!
A beautiful home, presents.
We travel every year!
You're being unfair.
I'm here with you every single day.
I love you.
There's absolutely no reason for you to feel lonely.
I know what's going on with you!
You're having an existential crisis.
Typical artist stuff!
Why don't you take advantage of it and do some painting?
I'll organize an exhibition for you.
Wouldn't that be wonderful?
It'll be great!
And listen to me.
All this complaining about having nothing to do is an insult to women everywhere.
The care you give our home is extremely important.
You're essential here.
You're the one who takes care of our temple.
The place where I come home to find peace.
My queen, do you know what we really need?
A child!
A baby to bring joy into this house!
That's what will give meaning to your days.
A woman is never complete until she has a child.
HELENA: A child?
What?
I had never wanted to be a mother.
I'd hardly ever paid any attention to children.
The whole idea seemed absurd to me.
But who said Paulo ever listened to me?
There were countless attempts.
So much hope.
So many disappointments.
It was a living hell that only made me feel emptier.
Every time I got my period, Paulo became irritated.
He would barely look at me until I was fertile again.
And then he would force me to try again.
Again.
And again.
PAULO: Helena, I've made an appointment for you with a fertility specialist.
She's going to solve your problem.
Now you'll finally be able to get pregnant!
HELENA: One day, as I was getting ready to go to the doctor for yet another insemination, I suddenly started feeling sick.
My heart was racing.
I couldn't breathe.
Paulo called an ambulance, and I ended up in the hospital.
I thought I was having a heart attack.
But it was actually a terrifying anxiety attack.
Well, considering the life I was living, it's surprising it took me that long to have one, isn't it?
Thanks to that breakdown, I ended up with a psychiatrist.
And along with him came a whole collection of medications.
At first, I did feel a little calmer.
But the truth is, deep down, the pain doesn't go away.
Because medication can't reach the soul.
And do you think that got me out of the inseminations?
Not at all!
Before long, I was back at the hospital, doing exactly what Paulo wanted.
Feeling like the worst woman in the world.
My torment continued.
Until something unexpected happened.
DOCTOR: Mrs. Helena!
You finally did it!
You're pregnant!
You're going to be a mother!
Congratulations!
Are you happy?
HELENA: I didn't have an answer to that question.
But Paulo and my mother were overjoyed.
It seemed as though they were finally seeing me.
But I was still trapped.
Only now, there was a baby on the way.
And that was what I was supposed to focus on.
So, to keep myself from completely losing my mind, I started cooking again.
My old passion.
In secret, of course.
Paulo hated the idea of me being in the kitchen.
Cida covered for me, since she hated cooking anyway.
And Paulo ate everything I made, believing that Cida had taken an online cooking course!
That's how I got through those painful months of pregnancy.
Until, finally, the time came
9. FAREWELL SERENADE (SERENATA DO ADEUS)
Oh, the moon that rose in the sky
Is not the same moon that watched you
Being born from my arms.
Night falls upon our love
And now all that remains of love
Is a single word: Goodbye.
DOCTOR: Mrs. Helena, I'm very sorry to tell you this, but unfortunately, the baby didn't survive.
Oh, how I wish I could stay
But I have to go.
Oh, to love is to slowly die
Throughout the journey of life.
It is to reflect in a tear
The fleeting moment
Of a pure star
Whose light has faded
On a dark night
As sad as I am.
HELENA: Why did this happen to me? Why?
PAULO: I can't believe this!
I didn't even get to hold my child in my arms!
How could you do this to me?
You can't even fulfill your duty as a wife!
It's your fault!
HELENA: My fault?
What does he mean?
What is he saying?
Only I know the pain I'm feeling!
He doesn't care about my feelings.
Selfish bastard!
What a terrible husband I have!
I don't even recognize the man I married.
PAULO: Hello? Hi, my queen.
I miss you too.
I can't wait to see you.
I'll find a way for us to meet.
Tomorrow, I'll…
Helena!
I didn't even see you come in.
I'm talking to Sidney from work. Remember him?
What?
Where did you get that idea?
I'm not doing anything like that!
You're imagining things!
You're out of your mind!
You need to see your doctor and have your medication adjusted!
Now let me work!
What?
What could possibly be more important than my work?
Something serious?
Then say it!
What did you say?
Separate?
You must be completely insane!
I'll have you committed to a psychiatric hospital!
That's never going to happen, do you hear me?
Never!
You're my wife, and that's final!
I've taken care of you ever since you left your mother's house!
You're nothing without me!
Do you hear me?
Nothing!
Your place is by my side!
Don't you understand that I love you?
You're the love of my life!
I won't accept you leaving me.
If you go, I might as well end my life.
I'll kill myself, do you hear me?
I'll kill myself!
I want to hear you say you love me!
Say it!
Tell me you'll never leave me!
You're mine, understand?
Mine!
Repeat it!
Say you're mine!
Say it!
Say it, damn it!
Say it!
10. WARNING CRY (GRITO DE ALERTA)
First, you torment me
You twist my thoughts
You leave a bitter taste of gall in my mouth.
Then you come crying
Offering apologies
Almost begging
Trying to win back a little sweetness.
Can't you see that I tear myself apart?
I choke, I swallow, I reflect
And I reach out my hand.
And so our life becomes a river drying up
Its stones cutting into us
And I keep asking: How much longer?
So many tiny things
Gnawing away, consuming
Slowly destroying our dreams.
Words lost in a world of shouting and gestures
In a game of blame that causes so much pain.
I don't want to be right
Because I know
How wrong I've been
How much I've helped destroy.
I can only feel that moment in the air
When the glass is finally full
And there's nothing left I can swallow.
Look, our relationship is a half-open door
I've searched for the right words
Please try to understand my warning cry.
Look, it's love stirring my heart
One needy part of me keeps saying yes
While the life we're living screams no.
CIDA: Mrs. Helena, how are you?
I saw everything through the crack in the door.
That man looked like a madman!
You can't keep living like this.
This is no way to live!
He has no right to treat you that way.
Let me see your face.
Good heavens, it's all red!
I'll get you some ice.
All right, never mind.
I'll stay here with you.
You know, Mrs. Helena, there's a story I've been wanting to tell you for a long time.
And I think now might be the right moment.
Oh, you're not in the mood?
Well, I'm going to tell you anyway!
It happened back where I come from, in the backlands.
Have you ever been to the backlands?
No?
I didn't think so.
The backlands are a curious place, you know.
When you look at the land, it seems dry, lifeless.
But it isn't!
There are all kinds of plants and animals.
And birds so colorful they look like they came straight out of a cartoon!
And any creature that wants to survive there can't be weak.
It has to be strong.
Brave.
Just like the…
11. CARCARÁ
Carcará!
There in the backlands
It's a bird that flies like an airplane
A fierce bird
With a curved beak like a hawk.
Carcará!
When it sees a burned field
It flies off, singing.
Carcará!
It goes out hunting.
Carcará!
It even eats burned snakes.
CIDA: When I was twelve years old, my father sold me to a man.
That monster turned my life into hell.
The bastard beat me and raped me every single day.
And I lived like that for years, believing that was the only destiny life had in store for me.
But when the rainy season comes
There are no more burned fields in the backlands.
Even then, the carcará never goes hungry
The newborn lambs down in the valley…
Carcará!
CIDA: One day, I was standing outside my house, getting beaten with a stick, as usual.
When suddenly, a whole gang of cangaceiros — outlaws from the backlands — came riding onto the property.
That man was terrified!
But I just stood there, staring.
And then I realized something extraordinary.
They were cangaceiros, all right.
But they weren't men.
They were women!
Women outlaws, riding straight toward us.
Carcará is fierce, a fearless fighter
The eagle of my backlands.
The newborn lambs can barely walk
It grabs them with its beak and kills them.
Carcará!
CIDA: When they got close, the woman who seemed to be the leader jumped off her horse.
Quick as lightning, she grabbed that man by the hair and said:
CANGACEIRA: You miserable bastard!
Now I'm going to teach you never to mistreat another woman again!
I'm going to put an end to your wicked life right here!
But before you die, I don't want you leaving this world without knowing something.
So first, let me satisfy your curiosity.
Do you know how I became a cangaceira?
A divine mission!
One day, I was leaving the memorial Mass for my mother, who had died at the hands of a monster just like you.
And there, at the top of the hill, I saw the most beautiful vision in the world.
It was the little saint my mother worshipped.
Saint Barbara herself!
She appeared before me and entrusted me with a mission.
To bring justice to the women of these backlands!
Do you understand, you worthless bastard?
I am a messenger of the saint!
So you'd better start praying!
Because the time has come for you to meet the devil himself!
Carcará is fierce, a fearless fighter
The eagle of my backlands.
The newborn lambs can barely walk
It grabs them with its beak and kills them.
Carcará!
It catches, kills, and eats.
Carcará!
It will never starve.
Carcará!
Braver than any man.
Carcará!
It catches, kills, and eats.
CIDA: And that's what happened, Mrs. Helena.
I seized that sudden moment of courage and rode with those women to the next town.
There was nothing left for me in that place.
And when I arrived, I had absolutely no idea what I was going to do.
At first, it wasn't easy.
I didn't know how to do anything.
But little by little, I found my way.
I got one job here, another one there.
And eventually, I even started having dreams of my own.
I dreamed of coming to Rio de Janeiro.
Of having a proper job, with a signed work contract.
I discovered a strength inside myself, just like the carcará!
Do you understand what I'm trying to tell you, Mrs. Helena?
If I, who had nothing — no education, no money — managed to change my life, then you can change yours too!
You deserve a better life.
HELENA: Cida's words didn't make much sense to me.
After all, Paulo had never done anything like that before.
He apologized.
He'd simply lost control.
We had suffered so much after losing the baby.
He had suffered so much.
That's why he lost his temper.
But he loves me.
He's the love of my life.
After that day, Paulo actually improved for a while.
But it wasn't long before he started coming home late again.
Only now, I didn't care anymore.
One evening, we were coming home from a birthday party for one of his friends.
He'd had a little too much to drink.
And the moment we walked through the door, he started:
PAULO: How dare you behave like that in front of my friends?
Throwing yourself at everyone!
You're a slut!
That's why you don't want to have sex with me anymore, isn't it?
You probably have a lover somewhere!
That's the only explanation!
You're cheating on me!
You're cheating on me!
HELENA: Cheating on him?
How could I possibly be cheating on him?
Unless I was sleeping with the doorman!
He was practically the only man I ever saw, and even that was only once in a while!
That man was driving me insane!
I couldn't take it anymore.
And then I exploded.
Stop it!
I've never cheated on you!
Never!
But you…
Do you think I don't notice?
The smell of women's perfume on your clothes!
You coming home late almost every night!
If anyone's cheating in this marriage, it's YOU!
You're the bastard here!
Paulo stood completely still.
He had never seen me stand up to him like that.
And I have to admit, it felt wonderful to finally say what I was feeling.
But it didn't take him long to recover.
He came charging toward me, his face twisted with rage.
I thought:
He's going to kill me!
But before he could reach me, Cida appeared.
CIDA: You stay right where you are, mister!
I may not have seen Saint Barbara herself, but her mission has been passed on to me!
You're not going to lay a single finger on Mrs. Helena!
And you, Mrs. Helena…
You're free now.
Go!
HELENA: I won't change
There's no solution to this story
I'm a wounded beast
In body, soul, and heart.
And now I'm here.
Thank goodness.
I did it.
I finally broke free.
That's wonderful.
But now what?
What am I going to do?
I'm lost in this place.
Alone.
Completely on my own.
I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do.
How am I going to support myself?
Where am I going to live?
I don't know how to do anything.
What if Paulo was right when he said I was nothing without him?
Now that I'm out here, free, I'm suddenly terrified.
Afraid I won't make it.
Afraid something terrible might happen to me.
Afraid I won't be able to handle things on my own.
I don't even know where to begin.
Which path should I take?
Who can help me?
12. WHO WILL TAKE AWAY MY GHOSTS? (QUEM ME LEVA OS MEUS FANTASMAS)
Those were the days when hands were clenched
And on bright nights, words took flight.
I could see the sky being born from my fingertips
The Great Bear constellation was made of glowing iron.
Sailors lost in distant ports
In hidden bars
In enormous dreams.
The empty city, the color of asphalt
Someone asked me to sing louder.
Who will take away my ghosts?
Who will save me from this sword?
Who will show me where the road is?
Those were the days
When shadows opened
When some men denied what others had built.
I drank life in small sips
I stumbled through laughter
I didn't embrace enough.
With your back turned, you cannot see the future
Nor the path of a bullet
Nor the crack in the wall.
And someone shouted at me with the voice of a prophet
That the road is made between the target and the arrow.
Who will take away my ghosts?
Who will save me from this sword?
Who will show me where the road is?
Who will take them away?
Who will take away my ghosts?
Who will save me from this sword and show me the way?
Who will take them away?
IANSÃ: My child, you didn't end up here by accident.
I'm the one who brought you here to enlighten your mind.
Listen carefully to what I'm about to tell you:
The one who will save you is YOU!
13. THE LADY OF LIGHTNING AND WIND (A DONA DO RAIO E DO VENTO)
I am Iansã's lightning
Blinding the steel of warriors' weapons.
And I am Iansã's wind as well
For Saint Barbara is the saint who lights my way.
I am Iansã's lightning
Blinding the steel of warriors' weapons.
And I am Iansã's wind as well
For Saint Barbara is the saint who lights my way.
My voice is the wind of May
Crossing the skies, the seas, and the earth.
And my eyes hold the power of lightning
That rises from deep within my heart.
I know no gust of wind
More powerful than my passion.
And when love flashes like lightning inside me
My heart becomes a blazing bolt.
I am Iansã's lightning
Blinding the steel of warriors' weapons.
And I am Iansã's wind as well
For Saint Barbara is the saint who lights my way.
I am the home of lightning and wind
Wherever I go, there is thunder and light.
Because Iansã, from the moment I was born
Became the mistress of my heart.
I am Iansã's lightning!
IANSÃ: Blessings, my child!
You've finally arrived, my daughter!
You should know that I moved an entire army to bring you here.
But let's get to what really matters.
We women, since the beginning of time, have been oppressed, subjugated, massacred, tortured, stoned, and even burned alive.
And yet, we survived.
We fought.
We overcame obstacles.
And we conquered the world.
Just look around you.
The world is full of extraordinary women whose stories of struggle can inspire you.
And long before us, our ancestors were already fighting their own battles.
They planted the seeds of strength and determination deep within our hearts.
So have courage, my daughter!
Everything you need is already inside you.
Trust yourself.
Your achievements are waiting for you.
It's never too late to begin again!
HELENA: Everything I need is already inside me…
14. PLAYING AT LIFE (BRINCAR DE VIVER)
Who called me?
Who would want to return to the nest?
To rediscover their place
To return and face everyday life
To learn how to dream again.
You'll see, that's how it really is
The story never ends.
It goes on whenever you say yes
To your imagination.
To the art of smiling
Every time the world says no.
You'll see that emotion begins right now
Now is the time to play at living.
Don't forget: no one is the center of the universe
And that makes life all the more enjoyable.
You'll see, that's how it really is
The story never ends.
It goes on whenever you say yes
To your imagination.
To the art of smiling
Every time the world says no.
HELENA: Good evening, everyone!
Thank you so much for being here on this very special night.
Tonight, I'm making a dream come true:
The grand opening of Bistrô Albertina!
A small tribute to the woman who taught me to love cooking.
So many women helped me get to where I am today.
And I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of them.
Our sisterhood is eternal.
Thank you, Mrs. Albertina, Débora, Cida, my mother, my daughters, Maria, and all of you!
Eparrei!
And I wish to love
Everyone who crosses my path.
As happy as I am
I want to see happiness
In everyone who walks beside me.
Come along!
